New Fans and Fan Making Tips

craftgrrlI made some new fans this weekend after being inspired by the workshop. These look different than the others. One is a full fan, the others have one main big feather with other supporting feathers. What do you think?

This is a hand-carved and finished walnut handle made by my friend and handle supplier, Clif Palmberg. We have worked together to design the right kind of top for the handles. They have a slot at the top that is wide enough for the width of one large feather quill. I usually start by creating a base for the fan that is no more than one quill thick so that it can fit in the handle. I do this by hot gluing the bottom layer of feather quills to some scrap leather or suede. Then I put some hot glue in the slot and slide the base in. The fit is snug and sometimes a the glue is a bit messy, but that is ok because you are going to cover that with more feathers and a skirt of sorts.

From there, you just create - layering on the decorative feathers and creating a skirt as short or long as you'd like. Create fringe by simply cutting even strips into a solid piece of suede or leather and wrapping around. Decorate with shells or beads or stones.
