Faux Finish-ness

I have a question regarding faux finish type stuff. I'm making some wooden books that I'd like to kinda finish to look like old leather/fabric book covers. For the fabric ones, I thought I might paint them whatever colour I'd like then press fabric into the wet paint to give it texture, then like, dry brush it.
Think that might work? And what would all you crafty people suggest for the faux leather covers? I'd love some awesome input :)
