pants for my fella!

So, i just bought some goth pants (pretty much these) at salvation army for my boyfriend. (i got them $1!!they usually sell for $50!!) Only problem is, the pants are a size large, and my fella wears an extra large. Im thinking i need to add about 3-4 inches at the waist. I was thinking of adding gussets, like, upsidedown triangles at the sides of the waist, and have them taper down. But ive never done this before. can anyone help?
