Monday's leather project post...
Aug. 18th, 2008 11:02 amotherwise known as:
A better fitting, not butt ugly, carpal tunnel wrist brace.
Because I have notoriously bad arthritis, and carpal tunnel inflammation in my wrists and hands from all the stuff I do.
I bought one of those prefab stretchy beige things from the drugstore.
Despite it being a 'small' it still covered my pinky, and just didn't fit well.
Plus the velcro top closures hooked on everything, and let's face it, the thing was butt ugly.
So......
I made myself a better one.

Using this gorgeous burgundy upholstery rem leather I purchased at the local leather shoppe.
Lacing eyelets down the sides which give a good fit, give ventilation, and just look nifty.
50 eyelets total.
Yeah, it's alot.
I pulled the aluminum bracer out of the ugly one and sewed it onto the palm

And further proof that I do indeed brutalize my hands, which is why they're in such bad condition:
Big nasty blood blister on my cuticle from when the plastic mallet slipped off the hole punch as I was hammering and got me instead.

Took about 2 hours.
The only difference I would make in the construction is perhaps facing the tops around the knuckles and thumb opening with more leather as it's already starting to stretch and warp a bit from hand moisture and wear. Which is more of an aesthetic thing as it serves no purpose for supporting the wrist. More just so it won't bag/ sag. I may do a bit of reinforcement stitching on this one to keep the leather from stretching out too much. We'll see
