My owl quilt arrived at its destination last night so I can finally show it off without ruining the surprise! ( Crafting teaches you many skills, patience being one of them! )

My first quilt ( even though it is mini! ), my first binding, my first raw-edge appliqué, and my first free-motion quilting, phew!

Katy's favourite colour is red, so I really ran with that. How can you resist red and white?! I especially love the tiny polka dot material for the binding (found at the infamous Gail B's). I really love making rainbows (or one-colour-bows), and I think this appliqué turned out alright.... I hope you can tell that it's supposed to be an owl silhouette!

I found the free-motion quilting to be really fun towards the very end when I finally relaxed enough to untense my muscles :p

The border is another technique that I'm sure there's a proper name for, but again I'm not sure what the proper term is so we'll just call it a flange.

The little flange thing is inspired by one of chaletgirl13's lovely quilts - although I'm sure when she made hers she knew what the heck she was doing! Took me a bit to figure out how to attach it to get the effect I wanted.

And on the back is a panel from the Portobello Market line by 3 Sisters for Moda.

( You'll have to excuse the quality of the photos - these were taken back when I was shooting through that "special" fingerprint filter. )

I had such a fun time making this one (and the other September mini which I can't show you just yet), so much so that I'm now signed up for the Doll Quilt Swap #5 and will, knowing me, probably be signing back up for November's 6"-12" quilt swap too!

It was definitely a big learning curve for me.

Some things I learnt while making this quilt:

*  Do not sneeze while free-motion quilting. Ever.

*  Sew the quilt label on AFTER you've quilted (unless you want the label to be irreversibly stuck to the back of your quilt).

*  Sewing mistakes can take seconds - unpicking them can take hours.

*  There's more of a knack to binding than I thought...

( I went to iron out my strip of binding to find I'd sewn a section on with the wrong side showing.. )
