Statue Painting
Dec. 23rd, 2008 12:13 amI bought some ceramic statues about ten years ago and a bunch of acrylic paints to paint them with, so when I found them in the attic the other day, I drug out the [same!!] paints and gave them a complete makeover. I neglected to take any pictures of their previous coats, but suffice it to say, they were pretty typical for a ten year old.

I gave him this really creepy face xD I kinda like it! (it just didn't occur to me to paint him eyelids). I've had two people ask if he's supposed to be Moses, but he's not

(too lazy to use the camera)
I remembered to give her eyelids so she doesn't have such a weird expression, but her nose has gone pretty Michael Jackson. I don't know if it came out of the mold like that, but xD She also had this pretty nasty splotch on her cheek too, but I sanded it down.
The wizard I didn't do any prep work on; I didn't even dust him. I did strip most of the paint off the maiden though.
Tips for this:
Acrylic paint will absorb rubbing alcohol (or rubbing alcohol absorbs paint, I'm not sure how the chemistry works out on that). My method initially was to spot-rub alcohol on, but this was really slow and annoying, so I switched to using a zip-up sandwich bag and filled it with alcohol a little ways. You can rub the plastic into the ceramic to take off some paint, and what you don't take off will soften so you can scrape it off.
I wasn't the most careful dude at scraping, my tool was initially fingernails, but after I broke those all down, I switched to a small screwdriver (it being what was at hand). Something softer would probably be better because I ended up scraping the ceramic up a lot and losing a lot of the little details and embellishments, but it worked pretty well.
I just wished I had my good paintbrushes here at the house. I had to make do with my old watercolor ones from when I was reaaaaaaaally little xD
Oh yeah, i forgot to mention; to gloss the wizard, I used some clear spray paint my dad had. I was afraid it might dissolve the acrylic, but it didn't :)
