Family Jewelry Christmas Tree
Jan. 6th, 2009 11:03 amI realize the holidays are over and everyone is probably tired of anything Christmas related at this point, but I thought I'd share this anyway because it could be adapted in other (non-Christmasy) ways.

and a closer close-up

My great-Aunt Judy made this using pieces of family jewelry that had been handed down to her from her 4 older sisters (my grandmother was the oldest) as they passed away. I think it's such a cool way of displaying family jewelry that you have a sentimental attachment to but would probably never wear yourself. And it pays such a touching tribute to family that is no longer with you. Even though I love the Christmas tree (as Christmas is so connected to family - and my aunt leaves hers up all year long) there are so many other interesting ways you could take this concept depending on your family's personality. Heck, you don't even have to use family jewelry. Look out Goodwill - here I come... again.
A couple of notes about some of the ornaments - the top piece - the "star" - is one of my grandmother's pieces, the bird represents their maiden name - Dove, there are a couple of WWII medals or buttons from her husband, and the birthstone "presents" under the tree represent her children and grandchildren.
