Making patches?

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this, because I'm not having any luck through google

I want to make patches to put on my laptop bag. That's about all I know *LOL*
I'd be doing them by hand, as although I have a sewing machine, I still haven't learned how to use it.
I assume that I'd be doing embroidery, but I'm not really sure where to start.
I would prefer to find free instructions instead of having to buy a book, & also buy the individual items as I need them instead of a kit (to save money)

Any help would be muchly appreciated :)
