Thanks to advice I got in this community, my hoodie sleeves have gone from looking like this:

I used the tops of an old pair of socks. I can wear my favourite hoodie again!
The downside? I sewed through my finger. The needle went through my nail and out the other side. I'm usually very careful, I'm not quite sure how it happened. This machine can sew through pretty much anything; my finger wasn't the least bit of a challenge.

My advice: don't do this. The benefit of a treadle machine was that when I took my foot off the pedal, it stopped immediately, so there was only one puncture wound.
