kid's valentine exchange
Feb. 12th, 2009 12:51 pmMy kids are in kindergarten and second grade, and they have a valentine exchange at school today. We wanted to do something more than a card, so we made felt heart hair accessories and pins.

When I say "we," I mean that my kids acted as artistic directors on the project and wrote out their cards, and I was the production force for the felt hearts.
The hair accessories are just felt hearts with a button, sewed onto a bobby pin. I put a dab of glue where the bobby pin was stitched in, just to be sure it didn't slide off.

The heart pins are the same thing stitched onto a safety pin, which their teachers said were okay, to my surprise.
We mostly did the hair accessories for the girls in red and pink, and the pins for the boys in red and black, but I sent a few extras in different colors in case a few of the kids wanted something different.
Here's a picture of me modeling my prototype hair pin:

We cut some printed card stock and the boys wrote their to and from on them.

We poked a hole in the card and slid the bobby pins on, or pinned the heart pins on.

My kindergartener decided that he wanted to wear his heart pin on his red bow tie to the party today. If I had known that in advance, I would have reversed his out to give the hearts more contrast against his bow tie, but I think it still looks cute. I'm a sucker for a fella in a bow tie.

They're at school giving them out now. I sure hope they went over well! These were a little time consuming, but since I could assembly line them, it went quick enough. They don't have too large of class sizes either, so even with extras I think I made around 55.
Thanks for looking!
