To Serge or not to Serge?

craftgrrlRecently I've been making a lot of modified clothing (t-shirt and such. No pictures yet though). I've been doing all my work on my mother's old Viking sewing machine from 1982 but it is rather cantankerous and just about to give up the ghost soon. So I was thinking about getting a serger. But I don't have a lot of money to spend (college kid) and all the one's I've been looking at are so expensive.
Does anyone here use a serger? What should I look for in a machine? How would I go about using one? Is it just like using a normal (1980's) sewing machine?
