Dumpster diving

Hey crafters. I've been watching this coummunity for roughly 6 months or so, and I'm finally coming out of the shadows to ask a question. I've scoured the FAQ and didn't see a topic about dumpster diving. I'm all about reusing and recycling and I've heard many a story about friends and others who have come across some magnificent finds by the curb or in a dumpster, but how does one exactly go about doing this? Like are there any hot spots, such as the recepticals of certain chain stores? I've never been out to do this sort of thing before, and I have to admit I'm seeing images of myself running away from the cops :P Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
