Knitting noob!

craftgrrlI apologize in advance, but I'm trying to make my first knit hat. And my first cabling...ever.
The pattern* says "c2 over 1 right p" and "c2 over 1 left p" a few times. I don't know what this means. The description for the right is "cl1 to CN, hold in back, k2, pl from CN."
I know what k and p are, knit and purl, but if someone could describe to me exactly what the c2 over whatevers is in laymen's terms, I'd appreciate it!
