polar fleece yarn

my boyfriend wants to knit himself a ski hat. can one buy polar fleece yarn, or yarn that acts like polar fleece in that it is warm and nearly wind/waterproof (stitching will certainly affect this, he's aiming for medium to fine stitching)? and, are there any patterns you'd recommend? just a simple beanie is what he had in mind, but any little variations on that theme would be interesting.
