Hair Falls

Does anyone have any idea how to make these goofy fake hair falls you see around? I have an event I'm planning to go to later this month and I wanted to try my hand at it. Yikes, can you believe that people are making these out of yarn these days? How do you secure them from falling apart? And how do you secure them to your hair?

I'm not sure if I want to re-dye my hair, so I'm looking for ways to "highlight" instead.
