Sep. 21st, 2009 03:20 pmI'm back!
Here are my daring and astounding adventures in the world of amigurumi! I'm teaching myself to crochet, and here are some of the things I've made.
First up, an awkward turtle:

This lil' dude is one of my most recent creations. Done without a pattern- doing his head nearly did my head in. I'm getting the hang of it now, though! He has a rainbow shell because he's the mascot in my uni's queer lounge. Every time you have an awkward moment, the awkward turtle is there for you.

This was one of my first projects. I started out doing a pattern but couldn't understand it very well so I just went off my own way and ended up with this. I realised pretty fast I'd run out of ideas and space for all my critters, so I started making them for friends and family. This one is for my mum, she keeps it in her Mini Cooper for luck.

A jellyfish actually made from a pattern. Not bad for one of my first shots, and I learnt lots of tricks for later. I sent this one to my bro.

I couldn't figure out what animal to do for my brother, so I made him an alien. Very him- like my mum he takes his to school to give him luck in exams (and apparently it works, must be a clever alien). This was one of my first improvised projects.

My housemate's niece came to uni one day so I made her a cat all in one day. I made up the pattern, I'm quite proud of how it turned out given how little experience I had.

I asked a friend's daughter what her favourite animal and she said 'Ice cream!' - fair enough. I made her an ice cream. I kept getting the cone wrong and started again; I was totally pedantic about getting this one right. I named him Henry after Rollins (punk geek trivia; he worked in Haagen Dasz with Ian Mackaye before joining Black Flag) but I'm sure she'll give him a nicer name.

This is Babke the cupcake. I can't remember how but he ended up being Jewish, some kind of mad in-joke with my housemate (who made up a song about him that goes 'My name is Babke, I wear a yarmulke, I'm Jewish and new-ish' and goes on to sing about Gaza and Palestinian doughnuts. It's totally PC).

A psychotic penguin for Father's Day. I don't like working with felt and I was in a hurry, so I ended up with an extremely fat terrified penguin. Good stuff.
Saved the best til last!

Ishmael! The reason I learned to crochet was so I could make a squid, true story! My bro and I love squids and have a graphic novel character who's part squid. So this is Ishmael the squid. Extremely ambitious, particularly since he was made before many of the monsters here. I'm exceedingly proud of him. So I'll cap it off with him sitting on my housemate's head:

That's all, folks!
