[identity profile] midsummermuse.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] craftgrrl
Here is my issue. I am creating a paper mache mask. I created the base mask and shaped it, then built up the areas around the ears, eyebrows and mouth area with a paper mache paste I made using the instructions here. I think I was accurate with the amount of salt needed, but I definitely used too much glue (I thought that would make it better since was attaching it to my mask ^_^;;). After the paste finally dried, I covered the whole thing in strips of brown paper grocery bags to make a better painting surface. Now there is a weird white crystallization on top of the dried mask when the paste was underneath. I assume it is the salt content that was added to retard mold growth in the paste? But it could be the excessive glue also I was thinking. I tried to sorta sand it off with a wire bristled brush I had in the tool brush, but it is still there, just softer now. Should I coat the whole thing in more brown paper strips and hope for the best? I don't particularly want to try to paint it if the crystallization will interfere with the paint adhering and the texture of the surface of course. I have until the 15th to get this right and finished for a masquerade party I am attending on the 16th. Please help if you can!!

Ok! I posted my question about my paper mache mask I am working on from my Flickr account and now I can't figure out how to repost it to the  craftgrrl community. Please follow the link to my journal and try to give me some advice if you have experience working with paper mache making, especially the use of paper mache paste. Thanks so much in advance. <3
