mural painting is crafty, right?
Dec. 9th, 2010 10:48 amThis is copied/pasted from my LJ so a little background: This is a room my husband Kyle and I have been working on for our almost 3-year-old daughter. It's going to be part of her Christmas present. She has no idea we've been doing this and I'm so excited for her to see it!! The bed is from Ikea; the bedding is from Target.
The original entry:
It's not finished yet. I still have some details on the mural to finish, and decorating details around the room have yet to be done but I'm going to jump the gun and post some photos anyways. The photos make the room look darker than it is (see? That color orange totally messes with the camera's rods and cones too!) so imagine all these about five shades brighter. I kind of want to add in a brightness sound effect here but I am not sure how to spell it.

First we painted the whole room orange. It really isn't as dark as it looks in this photo!!
Instead of keeping her new bedding set out and referring to the pictures while we did the mural, I took photos of the parts we wanted to paint on her walls and then used those as reference. The murals were free-handed by me onto the walls and are basically exactly like the images on her quilt. There are some minor changes of course, but I tried to mix paints to get the right colors, etc.

The process... (ignore the other tree in the background; that's a different series!)

The finished version. Kyle painted this one entirely on his own.

Hooray!! The colors are actually really bright and pretty. We subbed turquoise for the gray in the quilt.

(I am hiding behind the lamp)

I had to have Kyle paint the very top of the tree because I was too short, even when I stood on the chair. haha I got the door in the photo as a size reference.

I've done some more to this mural since the photo was taken (the bird now has wings and an eye, and I did the first coat of the bird in the tree). I still have a few more details to finish on this painting before it's finished.

I love the hedgehog!! The mushrooms' designs are a little different than the quilt.

I have some more of this one in the earlier stages but you get the drift, right? Idk why we didn't get all the crap out of the room before we started painting, in hindsight (and especially looking at these photos - LOL!!) We just sort of shoved it all into the middle of the room and worked around it.

Although it doesn't really look like it in this photo, the mural is pretty tall -- taller than I can reach. Even Kyle had to stretch out to do the tops of the tree and he's 6'3", so. I still might paint some of the flowers/hill on the bottom of this one. Not sure yet...

Theeennnnnn we had to put together the bed.

OMG LOOK AT ALL THE PIECES

Need....fuel.....

I was laughing at him because he didn't listen to my directions and had to take this part apart like three times. Idk if any of you have done Ikea (I'm sure you have) but the directions are all pictures, so since I'm a super visual person I was the directions-reader. But then we decided to put the ladder on the opposite side as the directions said, and so we had to re-route our brains to think upside-up and backwards. It was interesting, especially since it was like 2 in the morning. We had so much fun though. Lots of laughs!
Success!!

Kyle was all engrossed in some show on our little static-y TV.
Like I said, there's still a lot more to be done (still have to paint and decoupage the dresser, paint the curtain rod and sew the curtains) but I'm super happy with how it's turning out and wanted to share! Hopefully we can get it completely done in the next couple of weeks!
