craftgrrl | Help with making a paperweight?

I've never made a paperweight before so I need a little help. I was going to make my friend a paperweight as an inside joke/"thinking of you" gift, but I have no clue whatsoever what to make it out of. I know it'll be ~~round~~ a sphere in shape though, and someone I know suggested some sort of recycled steel scraps. However, I wouldn't even know how to go about working with such a material.

What medium do you suggest would be "simple" (& relatively inexpensive) to make a paperweight?
