dyeing sand

I'm about to dye sand for my sand candles.I've used fabric dye in the past as it works well and comes in a varity of colors.I'm wondering if anyone else has any suggestions or techniques that they've used and had success with in the past?Well,off to the beach or maybe home improvement store.Either will work,but,play sand is convienent and I won"t have to fight the crowd or sift.
I know I'm being lazy,but,play sand will probably be the direction I go in. :)
