Speaker Question

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to customize speakers. My husband has these big, ugly, expensive speakers. The housing is wood, so I thought perhaps I could paint that white so as to blend into the background a bit more. But does anyone have any advice about replacing the fabric on the front at all? Again, I'd like to replace the current black fabric with white, but I'd prefer not to wreck the speakers altogether by allowing dust or some other ruinous material to get into the speaker components.

Anyone ever tried this? Any warnings?
