cheerleader skirt

i want to make a cheerleader skirt...but i have no idea how to go about it. i have quite a lot of black material, but i don't want to waste it. so just making up a skirt as i go along is out of the question...as, knowing my luck, it'd go horribly wrong! so does anyone have any patterns or tips or advice or anything??
