patching

i was wondering if anyone knew any techniques for protecting patches. i have vintage embroidered patches made out of thin thread, & they definitely will stain & wear quickly if not protected before being sewed on to something [i'm thinking about sewing them onto a bag, so that's even extra activity]. so i really need to find some way to protect the material before the projects.

any ideas?
