belt buckles

any ideas on how to make rockabilly type belt buckles (preferably metal), the kind that are usually cast metal and enamel, and come in the shape of dice, skulls, cherries, etc.? i was thinking maybe i could somehow use a picture and just coat it with polyurethane a bunch of times, but i can't figure out what to mount it on or anything. help is greatly appreciated, thanks....
