crooked thread makes me sad

even when i try try try sewing in a straight line, it comes out wobbly and crooked. (bad thread, bad thread!) so i'm looking for an inexpensive sewing machine...maybe a hand one??...just for light sewing and such.

what are your recommendations? brands? approximate cost?
