I did alot of batik when I was in Indonesia. It is a process of dying fabric using wax to mask different areas, and the materials and process are simple enough to do anywhere, if anyone's interested.

Get some parafin wax or beeswax from a craft store or from candles, and melt it down in a coffee tin floating in boiling water. Then experiment with fabric dyes, like Rit or some other storebought brand. Mask the parts you want to sheild from specific colors by painting with, splattering or crackling the hot wax on the fabric first. In alot of traditional batik, stamps are made from wood and used to apply wax in an even pattern across the fabric.

Remove the dried wax afterwards by soaking it in boiling hot water.

My teacher Nyoman and I, starting to apply color between masked areas.

My friend Una in front of some of my batiks in various stages of completion.

I just saw the neatest thing! I was looking in the window of the eurasian antique store around the corner from my office and they had a round dining table decoupaged with origami paper and other asian papers and writings etc.! It was so beautiful I want to make one for myself now!!

i've been making mobiles like crazy.

the picture is pretty bad, and you can't see the top. i've been making an X with thick wire, curling the ends to tie the strings on.
i've made a zillion of them. this is what happens when i try a new craft. i go crazy with it. anyway, i have one in each of my windows and most of my friends have a few. i'm thinking about selling some of the better ones at a craft fair. i was wondering what people think about pricing. should i make a base price for each size of mobile, or should i price depending on how much the beads for each mobile cost? some were much less expensive to make because all the beads were bought in bulk.

Does anyone have a chart that lists the measurements for different size clothing?

I want to make a skirt for my friend, she's a size 5 and I have no idea how small to make it (across the hips).

I'd go buy one of those pattern things but they always confuse me and I like doing it semi-freehand instead.

hey there,

i was wondering if anyone has done bookbinding, and if so, i read there are different types of coptic stitch bookbinding. i only know how to do the basic one-needle stitch, but i read there is a double-needle stitch and a few other variations. does anyone have any good links or examples if you have experience with these? i haven't seen them in a book i have but i am sure they exist and would like to know more.

thanx!

I went to the craft store today and got this book on crocheting Q-hook afghans as well as a gigantic Q-hook.

Are these things easy to make? Any tips? I'm just a beginning crocheter and I was looking for something that would be fast but simple.

Does anyone know a good website or mail order for wholesale craft supplies? I'm looking around for generic picture frames mostly. Any suggestions are helpful.

Does anyone know some good sites for Japanese book binding? I've been meaning to try it out, but am unsure if the sites I have found are any good.

I made these out of the shrill thrill of nothing. I trade art with a friend of mine.
