(x-posted to b0st0n, craftgrrl)

I'm looking for a place in the Boston area that has a good selection of shell buttons. Not ones that are shell on top and plastic underneath, but actual shell through and through. I want to incorporate them into my beadwork by using them as clasps.

I stopped by Fabric Place in Woburn, but they only had the plastic-backed ones, and they were huge anyway. Does Beadworks carry anything like this?

:)

Does anyone have any cute ideas for a sweet 16 present? My best friend's 16th birthday is on the 24th. I was thinking about making a scrapbook for her, but her friend is already making her one. I'm kind of stuck. I want to be original, but I'm drawing a blank. Any ideas?

does anybody know where i can get a pattern for sewing a cell phone case? i found one but it required piping and all of that fancy stuff while all i have is an old singer from like...the 50s. which does straight stitching and umm...yeah that's it, lol.

I have a question--
Is it possible to take a sweater, cut it up the middle, insert a zipper, then put a hood on it and have *voila, a hoodie?

Or do you think you'd have to get a size bigger?

Would it be fairly easy to make a legitimate hood?

A'ight. I'm merely musing. I have no intention of doing this. . . now. Money's tight and I have no cuttable sweaters. Just trying to inspire I guess.

Does anyone know of a stained glass studio in or near Raleigh, NC that rents workbench space by the hour or day? I learned how to do copper foil technique about 10 years and 1200 miles ago, and suddenly I've got a project that I have to do.

I want to make a stencil of this-- http://www.epitaph.com/_lib/stream.php?p=/21/_presskit/Death_By_Stereo_Logo_2003.jpg&f=Death_By_Stereo_Logo_2003.jpg -- but i have no idea how to.

if anyone has any ideas on a good material to use for making a stencil, please let me know. or any advice at all, really.
I'm also willing to just take it to a craft store and have someone do it for me there even if it costs money.. but i cant think of any places that make stencils.

a couple bags i finished today.

"orange you glad it's not a banana" bag
+1 more )

these were my first try at putting in a lining using our ancient sewing machine, which i haven't used in about a million years, so there is a definite "sloppy" charm to certain parts. hehe.

made with some simple single crochet stitches and easy to find yarn. yee. haw.

I was hoping that someone here would be knowledgeable about dyeing fabrics:

I have an army bag that goes over my shoulder, its big enough for a lunchbox perhaps - not like a messenger bag. Its made from very thick canvas - its super hard wearing and great.

The only problem is, I bought it from an Army Surplus when I was 14 and not all that stylish. So I bought one that's dyed purple. On its own, fine, but the colours I like to wear are red and denim and lots of colours that definitely do not go with purple. So what I need to know is - how can I dye this bag black? The canvas is so thick it won't soak up water (with dye in) like normal material would. Could I paint it on? Would a washing machine dye be absorbed?

I'm really keen to have a fancy black bag, so if anyone could help I'd be grateful as anything.

What kind, if any, sealers do you use? I am using metal surfaces, what kind of sealer would work best?
