I'm an illustrator/cartoonist... I neeeded a new sketchbook so I tried to construct one myself, using japanese stab binding. To make the cover I used the cardboard and clear plastic in wich pantyhose are sold, green tape, a button, and I added one of my illustrations and a velvet strawberry as a bookmark. Here it is

It's Mother's Day here in the States. Oh yes it is. It's also 2:30 AM where I am and I *just* got finished baking a dozen and a half cookies for my mother. They're called PeanutButter Blossoms and they are tastacular.

Last night I made a baker's dozen soaps for her in assorted shapes, molds, flavors, and yes glitters. Those got done around 3 AM.

Yes, that's right kids, I haven't been to bed before 2 AM for the past few days now. AND I'm getting up at 8 AM to pack these all up and mail them home. That's right-- BUBBLEWRAP and the U.S. Post Office at 8 AM. I'd better get some serious Daughter-Points for this one.

So of course all this late-night bragging/whining begs the question:

What did you make for your Mom this year?

Feel free to link to posts about it, post pictures, whatever. If my camera batteries weren't dead, this would be a post w/ pictures. (Cuz the cookies are SO cute and the soaps are some of the most beautiful I've ever made)... So, come on, this is [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrl... I know not all of y'all just bought a gift this year.........

i am so excited!

i get paid today, and since my rent is paid and my phone bill is paid i'm blowing my entire paycheck on craft stuff. [dont get too excited, i work twenty hours a week at a health store, so its like, a hundred dollars. ha.] its a good thing i got my joanns coupon yesterday.
anyway. i'm going totally all out and making my mom the following for mothers day:

-a notebook out of handmade paper, and then dying it with tea. the cover is going to have a small frame glued to it with a fake flower glued to the center. my question is though, i've never made paper before, is it too brittle to bend if i want to do coptic binding?

-candles inside of flower pots, that will be painted green and have flower petals glued to the rim.

-mini soaps in the shape of flowers, or watering cans if i can find them

mothers day is also the two year anniversary of my mom being in remission from lymphoma [cancer of the lymphnodes] so she went to las vegas for two weeks, and i started making her a flower garden, so thats why the theme. i hope i have enough time to get everything done! she comes home saturday morning!

If you were going to make a blanket, how big would you make it? I think it's going to end up being more of a cuddle-up-together-on-the-couch blanket rather than a bedspread. I figure I don't need a pattern, but I'm stumped as to how big to make it. Aiiee!

Has anyone tried to make their own home made paper, but used metal cookie cutters while the paper is wet to make shapes? I'm just thinking for future reference like home-made gift tags and decorations, like hanging stars on my Christmas tree and such.

i saw this on another site and thought this was the perfect place to post it:

Hello All.
I want to get a dog carrier, but they are WAY expensive.
So I figured I would try and make one.
I was just curious if anyone has made one before, and could give me some tips.
Here are some pictures of the styles that I would prefer to make.
I especially like the cylinder-like one.

Thanks!

I know there are a lot of crafts for using dead cds, but I was also wondering about craftyness for usable cds. What can I decorate a cd with that won't prevent it from being played, or melt, or explode, etc.? I want to do something besides labels or permanent marker, most likely something to match a book I am making for a friend. Thanks for your help. ♥

For mother's day I'm planning on making my mom a chest (like a bench). I was going to make it with flat sides, which (on the back, and left and right sides, but not the front side) would extend 1 in. above the top. I also wanted to make it have a hinged top, and have feet like on the coffee table below, only shorter. I also want to stain the wood with a dark cherry finish to match the furniture in our living room. i guess i could paint it black too, as some of our furniture has a black finish.
coffee
the dimensions are
35 in. L x 14.5 in. W x 18 in. H (without feet)

do you think that this is too ambitious to do in the short period of time i have? I figure the only time i'll have to buy supplies is saturday and i'll have saturday and maybeeee sunday morning for like 1 hour to work on it. also does anyone know how long paint on wood/finish takes to dry?

ps I've never really done and carpentry. do you think that this will be hard to complete? what sort of lumber should i use (taking into account i am on a budget)? what sort of wood should i use for the feet?

i have a jigsaw, which i know how to use. also i have a hand saw. i have a power drill and tools like screwdrivers, wrenches ect . but i dont really have any heavy duty cutting tools.

thanks for your help...i hope this works!
my dad could probably help me some but i'd really like to do the majority of this on my own...any tips you can give me would be appreciated!

This is just a nice crafty website I wanted to share with you all.

Paper Zone is a regional paper supply store that also does some stamps, handmade paper, grommets, stickers etc., and they have a website with some really nice crafty ideas, often things made with paper, of course. A lot of their stuff is very polished, and often somewhat unusual, but easy to do. There are card ideas, photo albums, paper lanterns, etc., and they have downloadable project sheets and templates. Their "crafter's corner" is here. Enjoy!

And for those of you who live by a Paper Zone and haven't been in, check it out! They have a lot of cool (though often expensive) stuff, and they do classes at least once a month, often for free.

I can't believe I have a corporate card to this place and have managed to not abuse it for five years! ;)

Hey everyone --

I went through every single memory about bag and purse patterns, but couldn't find what I'm looking for. I want a pattern for a single strap backpack similiar to this. I also googled a bit, but I must be looking for the wrong phrase or something since I couldn't find anything. I know I could kind of half-ass it and just sort of make it up as I go along, but generally the things that I half-ass have a very short shelf life (occasionally measured in days, usually in weeks). Since I'd like this thing to be pretty sturdy, some actual directions would be helpful.

Thanks :)

i need suggestions!

i have a job interview at the YMCA for a Day Camp Counsellor position on monday, and i have to prepare a game, either active or drama, and a craft, using construction paper, glue and scissors, and one other thing.

Although they didn't give me a specific age, i am assuming that the kids will be anywhere between 6 and 12/13. So, keeping that in mind, i need to come up with ideas.

For the craft, i am thinknig about paper airplanes. Bringing in some markers/glitter or something, and having them make airplanes, decorated, and then have then see whose can fly the farthest. But i also want a couple other ideas.

For the game, i am having some trouble coming up with something. I don't want a game which involves equipment, like dodgeball, or soccer, or anything like that. but i also need to gear it to a wide age range.

Do any of you lovely people have any ideas for either the craft or game?

cross posted.

So, I'd like to start sewing some of my own clothes this summer, and I have this fantasy that there exist in the world patterns for vintage dresses (late 50's-early 70's) in plus sizes (as in, sizes 22-28). The largest I've found anywhere was a size 18... any suggestions?

Wings

I saw these in a shop & bought them without even thinking what to use them for (S$2 for both, which works out to about US$1.60). They're just too cute!

Cute wings

They don't seem to have the same kind of backing as an applique, so how do I attach them to a fabric? Any ideas for a cute project to do with them?

This pouch was the result of a somewhat disasterous weekend.

I had intended to make three of these. I decided that it would be smarter for me timewise to machine sew as much as I could before I had to hand sew anything.

My machine was so nice and lovely to me whilst sewing some test fabric...but...once I put my petals in, it started gobbling it up and dragging into the bobin area! Argh! I then spent the next two hours cursing and cussing and trying to work out what was wrong with my machine...only to give up in defeat.

So - as a result, I had to hand sew this. I was not happy. I only got to make one pouch. But, after 3 hours of shoddy hand sewing, I couldn't help but smile....I thought my sakura came out semi-decent :]

It is made from a mix of Japanese kimono silk and fabric that I thought was cotton, but, I think it is actually a wool blend... I haven't finished the ends of the cords yet though - pretty fabric beads will be sewn onto them :]
