When I saw this post I was inspired to make my dog, Chocolate, her very own halter dress Halloween costume.

I am going to be the devil, and she is my minion. Here is a pic of the costume, and of the costume on her.

Happy Halloween!

Being a Poor Graduate Student in a Town Lacking a Local Yarn Store (oh noes!!!11!) I've taken to knitting what I can with what Hobby Lobby and/or Wal-Mart can give me, when I'm not making a trek to the bigger cities to get nice yarn. Not to mention, I had a lot of fun making/wearing the cotton halter I made in September, so, as a result, I'm on a wee bit of a cotton binge now. I should also add that, despite the many nice comments made about my hair (I went from a shoulder-length, emo-ish mane to a short pixie this summer) I'm growing it out somewhat. But I wanted a hairband to help me. Thanks to a couple of long classes, I was able to whip up this sucker:

Done in Homewood Cotton, color: Liqourice. I knit 1, purled 1 for the first row, then knit the second, and repeated till the end. I wore it to a grad school party last night, and my hostess's young daughter (who is just coming into her craftiness at the age of 10!) was gobsmacked and insisted I teach her how to knit on the spot!

I really am starting to like cotton; any other pieces someone can recommend?

Also, what is the opinion of knitting in class? I did it as an undergrad (it PO'd a few professors!) and now I do it as a grad student, which, as far as I know, my profs don't mind--they're all discussion courses, so as long as I'm chatting away and participating, they're all right with it!

My last (idiot) flatmate used to leave tea sitting for days in my white-inside mugs.  Now one of them is permanently stained: I love the mug (it reminds me of my great grandmother), but I don't love the nasty stains inside.  Any ideas on how to get it clean?  I'd strongly prefer not to use bleach or other really nasty chemicals, so less harsh solutions are a plus.  And I want to continue to drink out of it after I (hopefully) get the stains out.

Thanks in advance.

Hey girls!
Either I've never posted here or I haven't posted in a while.
I was just digging through my old fabric bins that have been collecting dust for some time now and came across this bargain bin piece of fabric I purchased about 2 or 3 years ago. I sure am glad I snagged this piece, now that this batman craze is sweeping the nation.

It is about 2 yards. Its pre-shrunk cotton, I believe. Not sure what I should make out of it. As you can see it's a LARGE repeating image, and this limits options. I was thinking maybe a hooded sweatshirt, but I'm not sure how well that will work with this material. I am pretty much a newblett when it comes to sewing. I have a machine as well as other resources.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Harassment?

My friends and I have art night every sunday.
This Sunday, today, I am going to start putting my costume together.

I am making my costume pretty much from scratch, I'm going at Columbia from Rocky Horror Picture show.

reference picture )

my main question is
how would you suggest affixing
literally thousands
of loose sequins to a top?
it will really be only for the one night, so it doesn't have to be too long lasting
Also, it is seriously, impossible, to find a pre-sequined top that I can easily alter (with the sequins looking right).

I'd prefer something fairly quick (no more than a couple hours of work)

I have tons of artsy/crafty supplies, so please list anything no matter how obscure you may think it sounds!

Thanks for all suggestions =)
I'll try to post pictures when it's all done and finished!

I am making my husband's halloween costume and I am trying to put button holes on it. I have a Janome machine with an automatic button-hole feature. However, when I make the button hole, the stitch density is different on the left and right sides. The left side (where the machine sews backwards) looks nice and the stitches are thick and close together but on the right side(where the machine sews forward) the stitches are farther apart like a zig-zag stitch. I have adjusted all the dials on my machine but I can't figure out how to make them the same. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

So, I was at my local Zellers this weekend when I heard an announcement from the speakers "Halloween costumes are 50% this evening"
Needless to say, I jumped at the chance for discounted goods.
I ended up picking up a child's size 7/8 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume (Leonardo ftw!) momentarily forgetting that I am not by any means child size. But seriously, for $12 how could I resist?! When I got home and tried it on, I was delighted with the look of it...aside from the raging camel toe in the miror. At any rate, my question is:
Is there any possible way to add some much needed leg room without completely destroying the costume?
Alternatively, I could go buy some green leggings and turn it into a one-piece bathing suit, but I'm hoping you ladies have something in mind?
For reference:

I loved all the responses to my Halloween costume question, thanks! And now I have another question.

So, when I can bother, I like to make my own journals. The problem is, I like lj for my own personal journal of events and ideas in my life. For writing by hand, I really love those books that give you little, teeny prompts - in the bookstore a couple of days ago, I saw a really nice book of lists to make, like "List your closest friends" "List houses you have lived in" "List your childhood pets." The problem is I can't think of enough to make a book out of. I really, really want Wreck this journal, even since my sister got it for her birthday. (And no, she doesn't live close enough that I could just steal it for a day and take my favorites.)

So, as my google is failing me, does anyone know where to get interesting content for journals? EDIT Or any idea for prompts, as long as I'm gathering ideas anyway?

Hello, all -

I posted a couple of photos of masks I made for my college's fall semiformal/masquerade a couple of days ago.
I did not, unfortunately, win the maskmaking competition. The girl who did had OBVIOUSLY bought her mask. I was unhappy.
[livejournal.com profile] babyxbadger  had requested that I post photos of me and my date in our masks with our outfits, so...
Here you go! )

Is there a technique to printing on card stock? I have a HP Photosmart C-6180 All-in-One printer and am having a hard time feeding it. It feeds right, hesitates like it's thinking about printing, but spits it out and proceeds to print on the next page (which is just plain printer paper).

I threw away the package wrapper, so I forget what weight it is, but it's just cheap, simple colored cardstock from Walmart's office supply section. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I finally got a new sewing machine and finished my first little quilt. It's got lots of flaws (and a major one on the bottom right) but I was still proud
