mood lighting

Okay, so I want some "mood lighting" for my Halloween party. I know I can go out and get a lot of black lights, red lights, halloween lightbulbs...

but if I were to spray paint regular light bulbs like black or red, would they explode? I know spray paint is flammable (did you know inflammable means the same thing?) so would the paint on the lightbulb cause a nasty explosion?

If yes, then how can I get my apartment spooky without a fire hazard and relatively cheap.

OR should I just skimp on other parts and invest in the bulbs that are made for this. Any ideas?
