my friend krys and i are trying to make me a halloween costume. everything was going well until we accidentally ran over a pin and broke the needle. since we've replaced the needle, our tension has been all screwy... a couple normal stitches and then stitches that are 3 times the normal length or maybe even more. the top thread also keeps breaking, like constantly. we've given up for the night.

sorry i couldn't get better, but it's red on red. you should at least be able to see that everything is uneven.

what on earth did we do wrong????

p.s. the thread is polyesther, the fabric is a thick knit. i don't remember exactly what it was called but it was something like a 'double knit' and is mostly synthetic. we've tried adjusting the tension in bothe directions to no avail.
