Nov. 11th, 2003 03:29 pmposted this in my journal awhile ago, and since people were asking how to make them, heres the instructions for the chinese boxes-

^ to make them, first unfold the box, and cut out 2 squares of fabric the same size as the unfolded box. then i just glued them on each side with elmers glue.

^ the square of fabric thats going on the outside needs to be ALMOST an inch bigger than the unfolded box, so that it can be overlapped and glued down on the inside.

^ after the glue is somewhat dry, cut the outside fabric so that when you fold it over it wont scrunch up.
1- cut the fabric in a line into the corner
2- cut 2 strips out like these so that there are two triangles inside the corner
3- cut these strips out at an angle

^ the fabric that covers the folding flaps that close the box should look something like this

^ by now, what you have should look something like this. (once youve cut out all the corners)

^ then use a glue gun to glue the edges in place.
1- fold the middle flap up forst and glue it down
2- fold both the triangles on the sides up so that they kindof overlap the first flap
the one time that i tried to use a glue gun for the WHOLE gluing (instead of using elmers) it wouldnt fold back into a box shape.

^ after you finish gluing, you should have something like this

^ then i used the handle that was on it, to make the new handle. the handle gets unfolded and stuck through the original holes AND the actual box itself, then bent up into a ring where the ribbon or string that you want to use threads through. (pologies for crapness of pictures)
and voila! there you go!
