marble magnets
Dec. 1st, 2003 04:29 pmSo some girl was asking for a marble magnets tutorial 'cos she couldn't find one. Well, I was bored so I made one, 'cos I'm a nerd.
MATERIALS:

Magazine (or any other source of small pictures)
Glue (some people use fancy schmancy glue, but just Elmer's or modge podge works just fine)
Flat Marbles (found at any general craft store, and some stores like Walmart, etc)
Xacto knife (may also be substituted by scissors, or some people use a hole puncher but I've never used one of those)
Magnet ( you can get magnetic strips at craft stores or you can use magnets that businesses give out -- like the Papa John's one I have pictured)
1. Run marble magnet over magazine pictures and find the image you want.
2. Cut it out! You can either set the marble down, use an Xacto knife and cut around it (like pictured), or use a pen and trace around the marble and then cut it out with scissors.

3. Put a dab of glue on the actual picture.

4. Place the marble on top.

----> If you are using plain Elmer's School Glue you're going to have to press down really hard so only a very thin layer of glue remains between the marble and picture, because Elmer's doesn't dry as clear as other glues.
5. Wipe away any excess glue.
6. Put magnet on back. If you have magnetic strip with a sticky back, it should be sticky enough to hold the marble. Otherwise, you can use regular Elmer's or modge podge. If you are using a cheap-o magnet from a business or something, you should not go lightly on the magnet! (by that I mean, with the magnetic strip don't need as much magnet on the back as you would a business magnet, because magnetic strips are stronger... I'd suggest making sure that the business magnet covers every inch of the back of the magnet).

I found a whole giant bagfull of magnetic strips at a thrift store for a dollar. But I hear that they can be expensive at craft stores.. so if you're sticking to business magnets, again, make sure you cover the whole back of the marble or else it won't stay up on the fridge.
Viola! You have a marble magnet.
FINISHED PRODUCT:

And for the record, I don't actually read YM magazine. I got a free 2-year subscription from some teen website, and I use it specifically for making magnets or collages.
Oh, and if you're neat you'll check out my crafty blog
