knitting question: stitch markers

I'm making the women's size knitted mittens shown here. It's been going great, but I've encountered something I'm not familiar with. What are "ring-type stitch markers," how do I use them, and what do I have to do when the pattern says "slip marker"??

I believe I am able to handle the rest of the pattern... this is my first time using a pattern. But could someone please help?
