Interfacing.. HELP!

craftgrrlHi girls -- I just have a quick question about patterns & interfacing that I couldn't seem to find in the FAQ.
Is interfacing necessary? And what exactly is it? I have sheets of fusible webbing for applique, is that the same thing? The pattern I'm reading calls for fusible interfacing & I'm wondering if I can substitute the webbing, or maybe make my own somehow out of additional fabric? Does anyone else feel like they're trying to read a foreign language when reading a pattern?!#@ Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)
