Painting glass/plastic

I'd like to paint the words "YOU DRUNK I'M THINK, DON'T YOU?" onto a tankard for a Terry Pratchett fan friend of mine. I guess plastic would be a better idea than glass, since we are, after all, college kids, and rooms tend to be messy and things tend to fall off shelves a lot. What medium do you suggest I use?

Also, does anyone in NYC know where I could get a tankard at a reasonable price?
