baby shower gifts?

Ok girls I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I've been invited to a baby shower, and I've never been to one before (I'm 16). I want to make the gift myself and I'm about to get a new sewing macine :) so if I could sew it that would be great. I can only follow patterns and hardly much else, but my mom can help me in the sewing department. I'm open to trying knitting or other crafts but it has to look good because it's for my boss' baby. She's really nice and I've worked for her for years so I want it to be special. My main problem is that I don't know the sex of the baby or its name or anything!
It's due in march, so I was thinking something maybe for spring or summer time. She has really good taste and is awesome at crafts so I have to make it good. I have until the second week in January.
please help!
