painting clothes

i just bought some paints this weekend so that i can try my hand at stenciling designs onto clothing (tshirts, dresses, jeans, etc) and the directions say that fabric should be "heat set". i feel a bit like a clod, but what does that mean exactly? ironing after it has dried??

oh and also, what kind of adhesive is good for holding stencil to fabric without mucking up the material?
