I'm making a scarf and I'm using a really bulky yarn. I keep trying to make my scarf roughly 10" across, all garter stitch, but once I've got three or four rows done the silly thing is nearly two and a half feet wide!

when I started casting on I pulled 30" for the tail... three times the finished width I was looking for. how come it keeps turning into monster scarf??
