ribbon barrettes

You may know what I'm talking about- the 80s snap clip barrettes that had thin ribbons wove throughout the top with ribbon trailing down ending with beads?

I've got an urge to make some for a friend's little 3.5 yr old, and bought the supplies but can't seem to get the weave part to look right or stay in place.

Anyone have links to pictures or steps to follow?
I've tried to find something online, but no luck yet.
