My friend moved into a small MIL (it's really more like a finished basement with an unusual amount of windows closer to the ceiling than the floor) recently, and after visiting it and seeing the "Sound of Music" playclothes recreated on his windows (thanks to the non-savvy design ideas of the owner), I realized those puppies need a fashion makeover. So, after introducing the idea of his buying more decent curtains and seeing the corners of his mouth turn down at the thought of the cost, I decided I would take this opportunity to make him some curtains! Only problemo is that I cannot sew. To overcome this slight obstacle, I thought I could buy fabric and faux-hem all the edges of the cut pieces with that hemming-tape which adheres with the assistance of an iron. Then I thought I could just do the same at the top of the curtains and leave a "loop" large enough to be able to slide the curtains on over the curtain rod. Will this work? Any advice on how to make them look cooler than that (while remaining needle-n-thread-free)? And is there a particular type of low-budget fabric that looks good and would successfully keep out light (without having to choose a dark color)?

Any and all suggestions are very welcome! Thanks!
