but thanks for all the input!
for my coffee table, I think I'm gonna take two wooden wine crates, make a couple of shelves out of them, then stick a pane of glass on top.
For the desk, I may try that filing cabinet/door idea, but only if I can find cheap goods.
How exciting, I'll post pics in a couple of weeks when I move in.
