Memo Board

I finally decided on what I want to make my sister for part of her graduation present (a bit early, but I wanted it to be special). I want to make her a memo board, probably a magnetic one. Should I use a sheet of wood and paint it with the magnetic paint or buy a peice of sheet metal? Also, I want to decopauge it with pictures of us and our family, so I have a few questions about that. Would I be able to decopauge over the metal? They're mostly digital photos, what kind of paper should I use to print them on? Photo paper, normal paper, is there a special paper? I'm new to decopauging, which explains all the questions. Any other thoughts or ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!
