embroidery thread??!!!

ok, I used to do alot of cross stitch and I have a ton of regular, non shiny thread. However, since I am now wanting to do some sublmine stitching and embroider.....do i need to have that shiny thread instead???

Also, I have NEVER embroidered before. Any site recommendations for basic stitches? Recommendations for what to embroider?
Do I need a backing of some sort for hand towels and washcloths???
