Dressers

Somebody loaned me a set of matching real wood dressers for my kids and she gave me permission to paint them and replace the knobs. Who cares about the paint and knobs!! What really annoys me is the stupid drawer issue. I can't open or close them because they get stuck and squeak. ARGH! They aren't on tracks, either. Is there some way I can alter the drawers in order to make the dressers functional without destroying the wood too much? At this point, the kids can't even open them and they're taking up space.
