fabric cuts are worse than paper cuts

I sew pretty often with all different types of fabrics. And every night, after I am done sewing, I wash my hands and go to bed. But when I am washing my hands, they begin to sting, and all of these previously invisibly, tiny cuts, show up on my hands a bright red. I have never experienced this other than when I started sewing, and my mom says that when dealing with fabric, it is possible to get tiny cuts all over your hands from the sharp fabric edges.

Does this happen to anyone else?
