I've only so far done really simple knitting patterns for scarves and baby booties. I really wanted to try the kitty hat that was talked about earlier, but I'm a bit put off by the pattern.
How exactly are 'markers' used. Any tips for novices?

I got an excellent 50s dress from a used clothing store, but it's a bit sack like so I was thinking of altering it. Shortening the sleeves should be a breeze, but taking it in at the waist seems a bit scary. Any advice?
