painting pages?

i'm trying to make an alttered book, but i have problem... i'm trying to make the pages colorful like ones i've seen, and i think i've seen some people paint their pages... my question is this, if i page the pages, how do i keep the pages from feeling all chalky? do i need to put some gloss over it? is there a certain type of paint people like to use? or is there a better way to cover the pages? thanx in advance.
