bamboo candles

craftgrrlI'm wanting to make some bamboo candles. I was thinking to buy two long sticks of bamboo and cut them into various sizes, make them into candles and tie them together with twine so that they're not just single candles.
My question, though, is this: what do you fill the bottom with to keep the wax from melting out? Is there something special? Or is it a really simple thing that I am completely overlooking?
