Mod Podge sub?

I went to Wal Mart today to buy some Mod Podge but being the broke student I am, I didn't buy any. Here's my dilema: I want to deco a box. It's a pretty sturdy one, not like a cardboard box, but like the ones you buy at JoAnn for painting and such. My question is can I dilute down some Elmer's glue with water and use it like Mod Podge? I know it obviously won't be waterproof or sealed like aryclic medium would but would it keep everything down? It doesn't need to be real hard or anything, just needs to keep the paper onto the box.
